Propeller Involvement Confirmed

“NaSTA has recently agreed terms to form a working relationship for this years event with Propeller – the first digital satellite television channel to act as a platform for 100% new and original programming. Propeller - a revolution in television”

Broadcast from Yorkshire, propeller is the first digital satellite television channel in Europe to screen 100% new and original programming. You can see us on Channel 195 on SKY.

Since its launch in February 2006, propeller's programming has become widely regarded as among the most creative on the Sky platform showcasing raw, edgy and challenging television. This is also broadcasting with a purpose and the channel is committed to providing a comprehensive resource for education and professional development, creating jobs and opportunities for anyone with the desire to work in the film and television industry.

An initial £5.2million of national and regional investment from Yorkshire Forward, the Learning & Skills Council and the Higher Education Funding Council has secured Phase 1 of the channel's growth to 2009. Further strategic guidance and support from Skillset, the sector skills council for the audio-visual industry in the UK, has seen the channel take the leading role in showcasing the quality work of new and emerging film talent.

Propeller TV, is a not-for-profit organisation that reinvests any income it generates back into schemes that support new talent and is under the scrutiny of the UK Film Council and Skillset in this role.

As a national broadcast partner with Skillset, Propeller has a remit to ensure excellence, not only in the programming it shows, but in the advice, guidance and support it passes on to new talent trying to make their break in the industry. Currently, about 1 in 10 of the films submitted to the channel actually make it to broadcast. This is often because filmmakers have not been aware of simple professional broadcast requirements such as compliance forms or music cue sheets. They also might have overlooked some technical transmission requirements or could be infringing OFCOM requirements.

Unlike many broadcasters however, Propeller does not simply reject this work, but endeavours to work with the filmmaker to develop a viable and broadcastable product by improving their skills, production knowledge and programme making expertise. The intention is that as this knowledge base amongst film makers grows, Propeller will be able to reject less and show more creative, inspiring, original work and contribute towards Skillset’s objective of ensuring the best possible support is available to budding professionals to help keep the UK at the top of the film and television industry.

Film and television continues to move rapidly into new dimensions, not only through the mass availability of cameras and laptops which enable people to have limitless opportunities for film making, but also the fantastic wealth of material generated by Screen Agencies, Universities and independent producers. Propeller has seized a unique position firmly at the forefront of this broadcast revolution.

Propeller is driven by a passion to give something back to an industry that is notoriously difficult to break into and demands much of the individuals who work in it. There is no concession on quality however, ensuring that whilst young talent is fully supported, those behind the cameras are expected to make excellent programmes for the channel's viewers who have a rapidly growing appetite for original, good, entertaining television.

  • Propeller offers a free European platform for filmmakers to showcase their work on SKY.
  • Advice, mentoring and conferences designed to raise national occupational standards within the broadcast profession.
  • Propeller can also offer a broadcast credit for new talent seeking to further their careers.
  • Propeller offers an opportunity via the website for perspective buyers, sales agents, commissioning editors to contact filmmakers direct and to vote and rate films online.
  • Support from a board of patrons, including key broadcasters, funding agencies and regulators.
